If you open youtube recently, you will see the top list of Indonesian music is held by Armada with their song Asal Kau Bahagia. Many people love this song because the music is easy listening and the melody is so catchy. Others may say that the lyric is so interesting and make us Baper and hard to move on. Well, while enjoying the song how if we learn something from it. Yes, like you see on the title of this post, it is translation challenge. Translate the lyric of this song into English and try to sing along with it later.

Hunt the Chair Game

Siswa adalah pusat pembelajaran dalam kelas, oleh karena itu keikutsertaan dan keaktifan siswa di dalam kelas akan sangat dibutuhkan. Namun tak jarang guru-guru menemukan siswa pasif dan kurang tertarik terhadap materi pembelajaran. Tentu banyak faktor yang mempengaruhi akan tetapi ujung-ujungnya membuat guru dan siswa merasa tidak nyaman dalam belajar.

Telah cukup banyak penelitian maupun kajian tentang penggunaan permainan dalam belajar. Tapi tak ada salahnya jika disini penulis ingin berbagi permainan sederhana yang akan membuat siswa aktif, tertantang, gembira, bersaing tanpa meninggalkan unsur materi pembelajaran yang sedang dipelajari. Permainan sederhana ini cocok digunakan dalam pelajaran bahasa Inggris, karena implementasi bahasa inggris untuk berkomunikasi itulah yang ditekankan pada permainan ini.

Permainan ini oleh penulis dinamai hunt the chair. Game ini merupakan modifikasi dari berbagai permainan yang penulis pernah baca, lihat maupun praktekkan. Jadi bukan sepenuhnya dibuat oleh penulis. Selain itu penulis juga tidak mengklaim bahwa permainan ini adalah miliknya ataupun benar-benar baru. Intinya adalah share something fun for learning.

Tujuan: 
mengaktifkan keikutsertaan siswa dalam kelas (seluruh siswa) untuk berpikir dan mengungkapkannya melalui kalimat-kalimat berbahasa inggris tanpa rasa takut dan malu.
 
Target language:
Simple present tense, if clause (bisa dimodifikasi untuk grammar maupun tenses yang lain)
 
Waktu: 
Persiapan 5 menit, permainan kurang lebih 8-10 menit.
 
Theme: 
Tema yang bisa digunakan dalam permainan ini cukup beragam. Merujuk pada genre yang dipelajari misalnya descriptive text dan report text, maka tema tumbuhan, binatang dan orang akan sangat tepat.
 
Alat yang dibutuhkan:

• Selembar kertas
• spidol/pulpen
• kelas/ruangan/open space
• kursi sejumlah 8-15 buah

 
Prosedur:
Dalam contoh ini penulis menggunakan tema binatang untuk mengajar teks deskriptif/report. Dalam kelas umumnya terdapat 28-30 siswa, maka permainan ini bisa dilaksanakan dalam 2 tahap sehingga separuh siswa bermain terlebih dahulu. Jumlah kursi yang dibutuhkanpun akan menyesuaikan. Jumlah kursi ditentukan dengan mengurangi satu jumlah siswa yang ikut dalam permainan. Misal ada 15 siswa yang ikut maka 15 – 1 = 14. 14 kursi akan dibutuhkan dalam permainan ini.

• Guru meminta siswa untuk menuliskan satu nama binatang pada selembar kertas menggunakan spidol dengan tulisan yang tebal. Kertas dilipat sedemikian rupa sehingga ujung atas yang tidak terdapat tulisan bisa digunakan untuk dikaitkan pada saku seragam siswa. Kertas ini digunakan sebagai identitas bahwa siswa yang bersangkutan memilih binatang tersebut.
• Guru menjelaskan cara bermain.

Guru memberi tahu siswa bahwa dalam bermain permainan hunt the chair, siswa akan mendengarkan sebuah pernyataan. Apabila pernyataan tersebut berhubungan dengan binatang yang siswa pilih, maka siswa yang bersangkutan harus pindah kursi. Siswa yang nama binatangnya mereka pilih tapi tidak berhubungan dengan pernyataan yang disebutkan tidak perlu pindah. Karena kursi yang tersedia hanya 14 maka akan ada 1 siswa yang tidak kebagian kursi. Siswa yang tidak mendapat tempat duduk akan berdiri ditengah lingkaran dan kemudian mengeluarkan pernyataan yang berhubungan dengan binatang. Pada kesempatan ini dia bisa berebut kursi dengan siswa yang harus pindah

• Menyusun 14 kursi melingkar di tengah ruangan.
• Meminta 15 siswa berdiri ditengah lingkaran lalu guru mengeluarkan sebuah pernyataan tentang binatang. Pernyataan yang dikeluarkan ini adalah target language dalam pembelajaran. Maka guru harus memberi contoh pernyataan yang benar. Misal jika target language-nya adalah simple present tense dengan tema binatang maka contoh pernyataannya adalah sebagai berikut: “if you have fur, please move”, “if the animal has four legs, please move”, “if you can fly, please move.” Pada tahap awal, pernyataan guru harus bersifat umum sehingga semua siswa bisa berebut tempat duduk. Misal, “if you need food to live, please sit.”
• Siswa yang telah memilih binatang sesuai yang mereka tulis di kertas merespon pernyataan tersebut dengan cara mencari kursi dan duduk. 1 siswa yang tidak mendapatkan kursi tetap berdiri ditengah.
• Siswa yang berdiri ditengah membuat pernyataan lalu ikut berebut kursi. Siswa yang binatangnya berhubungan dengan pernyataan harus pindah untuk berburu kursi kosong. Semua siswa dalam permainan harus aktif mengecek teman mereka, apakah mereka harus pindah atau tetap duduk. Jika ada siswa yang tidak pindah padahal seharusnya pindah maka teman yang lain harus mengingatkan agar dia pindah atau mendapat hukuman berdiri ditengah lingkaran. Permainan bisa dilanjutkan sampai sekitar 8 menit atau dirasa telah cukup.

I often want to be like other people whom I think are luckier than I am. Who doesn't want to have luxurious things, travel to famous tourist attraction abroad or have anything we want? I can be jealous to see that other people can do those things, but I can’t. However, I realize that grass is always greener on the other side. What I think is nice or good doesn't mean always good for me. I might have a lot of luxurious things, but I don't know how risky my safety will be. If I think what I have now, it might also be wanted by other people. It is only the matter how I gratitude for what I have. In life, it is not how much wealth we have that really matters, but how useful what we have for our life and others.

People can’t live alone. No matter how rich or how beautiful you are, you need other people who may be are not as rich as you, or as pretty as you. We don’t have any place to be arrogant or feel superior. No people will like us if we act as if we are a super human. Be human who humanize others. If we have something more, let’s share. Sharing is caring, and caring is loving. What is better than creates happiness everywhere we are. Don’t wait until you become a successful person to share because you are now actually are able to give something precious.

Descriptive Text

Have you ever seen Eifel tower? Or have you visited Kuta beach? Have you met Justin Bieber? Or have you tasted Bulgogi? You may have not seen Eifel tower from near, experienced the situation of Kuta, met Justin in person and tasted Bulgogi, but you may have known them from a friend’s story or reading from internet. When you read a text that tells you what something looks like, even in detail, or tells you how the beauty of a place until you can imagine it in your mind, it seems that you read a descriptive text. Descriptive text describes the shape, the color, the structure, the situation, the feel or the taste of something, even their characteristic. Therefore, you can know and imagine how something is really like, or how the place feels like you are there. The picture below tells you what are in a descriptive text.

Descriptive text describes the specific object with every detail in it. It means that a descriptive paragraph only focuses on a single thing. So, when someone writes a description of a parrot he has, it may be different from other parrots in the wild or in another place.

A descriptive text has three elements. The first element is purpose, the second is organizational structure, and the third is language features. Now, let’s discuss them one by one.

Purpose

The purpose of descriptive text is to describe things, people, or place in particular.

Organizational structure/text structure

Identification (introduction of the thing/place/person)

Description (parts, qualities, characteristic of the thing/place/person)

Language features

• Use simple present tense
• Use adjectives (beautiful, big, small, tall, red, wooden etc.)
• Use linking verbs (is, am, are)

My School Libray

My school library is a favorite place for many students and teachers. This building is located between school mosque and 9 D. It is in the middle yard of the school. From the yard we can see a big yellow building surrounded by palm trees and flowers. That is the library.

There are some posters hanging from library ceiling right before the entrance door. When we open the black-glassed door and enter into the library, we will directly see brown wooden chairs and tables arranged in square shape. They are the place for reading. Students and teachers usually sit there in break time to read books or newspaper. On the right of the door there is a silver counter where the librarian sits and is ready to help you. The book shelves are on the far left and right of the building. They are standing in some categories, such as story books, text books, social science, math, English, natural science and etc. The situation is silence and cool because the visitors are forbidden to make noise and there are some air conditioners. The light green wall and some pictures make the library visitor comfortable. We love our library, and we keep it clean and convenience.
